Earthenware

Earthenware pottery is the oldest type of pottery, and to this date, it's traditionally used for storing water and food in rural areas in parts of Asia and the Middle East. The finishing of it is brittle and rustic. It's still very popular in those regions. It's timeless, part of many cultures, and widely used as a decorative piece around the globe. It's the easiest type of pottery to get started with, making it beginner-friendly.

At first, you need earthenware clay, which you can get from any local craft shop or from nature. Start by kneading the clay to make it smooth; make sure that there are no air bubbles. Take a stalk of clay and place it in the middle of the wheel and spin and sculpt and shape it with a light hand according to your needs. Keep a bowl of water near you so that you can splash some water to keep the clay moist as you craft your pottery because the clay can dry up quickly and will make it hard to shape it. You can mold and sculpt it by just using your hands, but if you want to make it precise and have a symmetrical finish, you should consider using a pottery wheel.

After you are done molding it, you can make designs with a sharp tip while it's still wet. When you have achieved your desired result, you can ever so slightly remove it from the wheel and let it air dry. Thereafter, you should start with the firing process and fire it at a low temperature. When the clay hardens, remove it from the heat and let it cool. To make it water resistant, you have to glaze it. One of the easiest methods to glaze it is slip glazing. You first need to mix the clay with water, making it into a running consistency, and then apply it all over your pottery. Then let it air dry and then fire it at a low temperature. Once cooled, you can color it if you wish, and there you go, it's all done and ready to be used for household tableware or as a decorative piece. This is the traditional way of making it. Although it's the cheapest and easiest to craft, it's not that durable and is likely to crack while cooking in it, so it's ideal to use it as a decorative piece.
